Gainsborough Armchair, Chippendale Period, Carved Mahogany

Description

A superb Chippendale Period carved Mahogany Gainsborough armchair, the camel back flanked by arms with upholstered elbow pads and carved terminals raised on carved scrolled uprights, the seat above a rococo foliate carved frieze and raised on correspondingly carved French cabriole legs terminating in scrolled feet.

Circa 1755

H: 37”, 94 cms, W: 27”, 68.5 cms, D: 25.5”, 65 cms.

The exquisite carving on all the Mahogany show parts of the frame are an important indication of the outstanding quality of this rare example. Chairs like this are known to have been made by Thomas Chippendale for his most important commissions.
