Gents Silver Atlas Trench Watch by Stauffer, 1927

1900 - 1920
Description

Gents silver Atlas trench watch by Stauffer & Co, 1927.

The watch has a hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the Atlas stamp.

The name Atlas was registered by Stauffer in London in 1885 and in Switzerland in 1892. Atlas was the name of their factory in La Chaux de Fonds and watches produced there towards the end of the 19th Century were known as Atlas watches.

The Atlas name was then revived in the 1920s which is when this particular watch dates back to.

The three triangles within the Atlas logo refer to Stauffer’s third quality watches. Third quality watches were in fact their best top of the range watches (not the worst as we would think nowadays).

This particular watch measures 32.5mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the fixed wire lugs. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the hinged case back for Glasgow 1927 with an importer’s mark for Charles Nicolet. Around 1890, Charles Nicolet took over the running of Stauffer and in fact the company traded in various names which included the Nicolet or Stauffer name.

The lens is in good condition.

The dial is signed by the original retailer of the watch, Jas Hardy & Co of Edinburgh. The lens is in good condition. One of the blued steel hands is a replacement, although still antique.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
