A beautifully proportioned oak longcase clock with a clear silvered dial, dated c.1800.
The slender oak case is absolute simplicity until the hood, which has a wealth of detail. The flat top hood has a swan-neck pediment with three giltwood fancy finials. The corner segments of the hood door have contrasting wooden fretwork panels, and it is flanked with freestanding fluted columns. The hood itself has a simple locking mechanism from within the case for security.
The weight-driven 8-day timepiece movement unusually has skeletonised plates.
The 12-inch dial is silvered and engraved with Roman hours within, and Arabic minutes outside the minute track. It has a subsidiary seconds dial, and is signed Jo. Durnard, Edinburgh.
Matching blued steel intricate hands.
A Joseph Durward is known to have been admitted as a freeman of the Incorporation of Hammermen of Canongate, Eduinburgh on 20th October 1775. He was in business at 4 Princes Street, in 1785 and 11 Leith Street in 1817, and retired a couple of years later.
Photographed prior to overhauling, but priced to include a full overhaul and a 3-year guarantee.
