English Cut Crystal and Sterling Silver Inkwell by John Grinsell and Sons

1920 - 1940
Sold by Puckerings
Description

A handsome top-quality inkwell made from a hefty piece of crystal, with a beautifully hand-cut base in the ever-popular hobnail design.

The collar and hinged lid is made from sterling silver by the top notch silversmith John Grinsell and Sons, made for the luxury retailer, Smythson of Bond Street, London. The hallmark is for Birmingham 1936 and the silver also marked "Made In England".

The lid lifts to reveal the removable glass ink chamber within.

Smythson of Bond Street still exists today and has long catered to the highly discerning, from European Royalty and the Indian Maharajas to the likes of Grace Kelly, Katharine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert and Vivien Leigh. Influential figures, leading extraordinary lives, from Sigmund Freud to Sir Winston Churchill.

Holder of three Royal Warrants, having been granted a Royal Warrant from Her Majesty The Queen in 1964, HRH The Prince of Wales in 1980, and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 2002. While holding Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s Warrant (in existence until 2007) Smythson was one of only eight companies in the world to hold all four simultaneously.

Excellent condition, measuring 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" tall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
