Important Long Case Clock. Whitehurst of Derby.

18th century
Description

A rare opportunity to acquire a long case clock by one of the most respected makers in clock making circles.

John Whitehurst was a founder member of the LUNAR SOCIETY, a group of the top brains in the Country at this time. It's members included Matthew Boulton, Josiah Wedgwood, James Watt, Joseph Priestly and others. They met once a month on a full moon and therefore called themselves the "Lunar Society".

Whitehurst was a formidable engineer famous for making the Town clock for Derby and several assorted scientific instruments. He was later appointed to a senior post at the Royal Mint and later became a member of the Royal Society.

This fine example of his work is an 8 day clock striking on the hours on a bell.

A square brass dial with silvered chapter ring, working date aperture and gilt spandrels of four Gods to the corners .

The movement has been fully overhauled by our BHI registered staff.

A typical provincial oak case of the period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
