Portrait of an aristocratic lady, bust length in a blue dress, holding a sprig of white flowers,feigned oval, oil on canvas Housed in an 18th century style gilt frame with rosette corners.
 
overall size 84 cm x 70 cm (33 x 27.5 inches approx) whilst the painting is
 
72 x 60 cm ( 28 x 23.5 inches approx)
 
In ready to hang gallery condition, with localised overpainting,
 
light overall craqueleur, in 18th c style giltwood frame with rosette corners,frame has some losses mainly self coloured Does not detract from a fine piece.
 
William Aikman (1682-1731), Portrait painter
 
Born in Aberdeenshire, Aikman studied law at the University of Edinburgh. He took up a career as an artist
 
and, by 1703, was painting portraits professionally in Edinburgh.
 
He established a distinguished portrait practice in London, portraying royalty and many members of the aristocracy.
