Collinge Antiques has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
On a coastline busy with sails, a Dutch style barge crosses the path of a two mast square rigged brig. In the background an early steam ship (with masts) works against the wind, a line of thick black smoke blowing from the funnel. Location is unrecorded but note what appears to be ruins of a priory or similar in the background. Signed T.Watson in the lower left corner. Presented on the original canvas stretcher in the original gesso and gilt frame. Painting is in very good condition, some minor damage to the moulded detail on the frame.
Dimensions: width 67", depth 4", height 41".
