Moonphase Grandfather Clock by Bartley of Bristol

19th century
Description

An excellent West Country longcase clock with Moonphase feature to the arch.

The movement is of 8 day duration and strikes the hours on a single bell. The arched painted dial has Roman numerals, seconds and a date aperture. The makers name and place of work are displayed very elaborately above the number VI. The corners are decorated with gold and blue flowers. Also with matching blued steel hands. The Moonphase to the arch depicts the Moons age over the course of each month and also displays a country squire and a galleon.

The well proportioned mahogany case has unusual ebonised inlay throughout. The trunk has a typical short door of the period, inlaid quarter pillars with Corinthian capitals and an ebonised escutcheon to the lock. The inlaid base stands on just two front feet, another West Country feature. The hood also displays inlaid pillars and again with Corinthian capitals. The swan neck top is finished with an ornate brass finial and brass paterea.

Note: Mark Bartley was working in Bristol between 1815 to 1855. He was originally born in Germany. He is listed as a prolific maker of high quality clocks. He worked at several address in Bristol including Nicholas Street and Bridge Street. Upon his death in 1855 his wife Sylvia appears to have taken over the business and was working at Portland Place, Kingsdown.

Although this case displays some typical Bristol features the mahogany veneer used is unusual, as is the extensive ebonised inlay throughout the entire case. A high quality and collectable example.
