French Farmyard - 19th Century Oil Painting

19th century
Description

Lovely vibrant oil on canvas by Charles Wislin (1852 - 1932). The painting, which is in excellent condition, shows a view of a French farmyard. It is mounted in a quality gilt frame with moulded corners and has been re-lined. The painting dates from the late 19th Century.

Charles Wislin was an excellent post-impressionist artist and a pupil of Jules Noel and Jean-Paul Laurens. He resided in Paris where he studied law and was the son of a chemist/pharmacist. He devoted much of his time painting landscapes of Montmartre, of his travels of France and abroad - especially Italy. He was present in Frejus in 1881 and in Pont-Aven in 1906. He also painted in Brittany and the old Saint-Servais. For more than half a century his works were exhibited in Paris at the 'Salon des Artistes Francais' and the 'Salon des Independents'. He was awarded a medal at the 'Universal Exhibition' in 1900. An art critic of the time, Guy de Maupassant, wrote of the Salon in Paris on 10th May 1886 "A small abandoned plough is painted with great talent by Mr Wislin".
