Garden in the Snow - Oil Painting

1920 - 1940
Description

Lovely oil on canvas on board by Maurice Frederick Codner (1888 - 1958). The painting is in excellent condition and has a lovely tonal quality showing a pretty view of a garden in the snow. The painting mounted in a quality wooden frame.

Maurice Codner was educated at the Colchester School of art and it was after he served in World Wal I that he established himself as a successful professional painter. He often exhibited at the Royal Acadamy and at the Salon in Paris, where he won an honorary mention in 1938 and a silver medal in 1954. He was a successful portrait painter and his subjects included King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother. His portrait of Kathleen Ferrier is in the National Portrait Gallery. Codner was close friends with Alfred Munnings and they often painted together. Munnings actually painted him drawing titled 'Maurice Codner Sketching at the Bridge at Winston.
