Description

This beautiful 'engsi' (yurt door rug) was made by Teke Turkmen during the last quarter of the 19th century. In near-mint condition, the vegetable-dye wool is soft and luxurious.

The engsi was the inner door hanging within the Turkmen yurt - properly known as an 'oy') - and symbolically represented the gateway to Paradise where the bottom panel depicted the 'sky-door' which then led into the symbolic '4-gardens of Paradise'. The '4-gardens' are divided by a cross in the centre - the cross being a pre-Islamic symbol for breaking evil down into 4 distinct parts. This is a truly nomadic pre-Islamic rug - part of the shamanistic beliefs of the ancient Turkmen nomads.
