Superbly comfortable the chair has been recently upholstered in a thick cut velvet fabric.
Complete and original the chair has outswept arms and broad cabriole legs, the legs made in one piece and the brackets carved with rosettes to both sides. The legs terminate in naturalistic lion paws and the back of the legs are carved hairy fetlocks. From a private collection, a beautiful and well cared for early chair in exemplary original condition.
Benjamin Crook is recorded in St Paul's Churchyard from 1732-1748. Following a decision to retire, he advertised a list of goods to be sold including a varied range of ‘Cabinet Work in Mahogany and Walnut tree’ including several designs of chairs and tables. Only four pieces have been found with original lables and these show that his work was of excellent quality. The carved rosette being rarely seen on Georgian furniture but present on pieces made by and attributed to him.
