Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The fauteuil emerged in 18th-century France during the reign of Louis XV as an open-armed armchair designed for social drawing rooms and salons. Characterised by carved wooden frames, cabriole legs, and upholstered pads on the arms, these chairs were crafted to allow comfortable seating during social gatherings while displaying detailed woodworking.

Traditional French salon chairs were framed in solid hardwoods such as walnut, beech, or oak. The carved detailing was often highlighted with water gilding using gold leaf over a gesso base, and the seat construction utilized jute webbing, horsehair padding, and woven fabric upholstery.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved asymmetry, organic floral crestings, and curvi-linear cabriole legs. Examining the frame reveals mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, alongside natural wear to the gilding that exposes the reddish clay bole or white gesso beneath.

A giltwood fauteuil acts as a focal accent piece when placed alongside streamlined modern furniture. Pairing the ornate carved frame with contemporary neutral walls or juxtaposing the antique gilding against matte surfaces creates a balanced contrast in living rooms or bedrooms.

Giltwood requires careful maintenance to prevent damage to the gold leaf layer. Dust the frame gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents which can dissolve the underlying gesso.
