Bronze Sculpture of a Bull - 19th Century

Description

Large 19th century bronze of a bull by the French sculptor Paul Comolera (1818-1897). The bronze is signed by the artist and is in excellent condition with a lovely patina.

Paul Comolera was born in Paris and is one of the more reputable 19th century animal sculptors known mainly for his modelling of birds but also for his farm animal figures as well as busts. He was the student of the early animal sculptor Francois Rude and was the teacher of Jules Moignez - one of the more important animal sculptors.

Comolera made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1846 with a group of golden pheasants and he continued to exhibit until his death in 1897. His life is documented in several books including Animals in bronze by Christopher Payne (1986)

His work shows great detail an accuracy, which is shown in this bull sculpture as well as movement.
