Dersire Merny (1865 - 1947) was a Belgium impressionist painter and water colourist who attended the Academy of Fine Arts from the age of seventeen. In 1884 - 1885 he enrolled as a student painter with Jaques Louis Bonet and received the first prize for his 'ancient figure' and fourth for his 'figure from life' He continued his training with Theodore Baron and then in 1893 he replaced Augustus Dandoy at the Academy of Fine Arts of Numur where he taught and later became Director. As well his career as a teacher he had a rich professional life creating many paintings and watercolours. He painted landscapes around the Meuse, Sambre, the Ourthe, around Namur, beaches along the Belgium coast and the Ardennes. He organised many exhibitions which were highly successful due to the quick sale of the paintings. He also organised exhibitions for young artists - 'Provincial Exhibition of Fine Arts'.
Despite his busy life, responsibilities, honours and family life he remained modest and a keen lover of nature which is often captured in his paintings. Many of his works are now little known and many were kept by the painters family or are in private collections.
