Antique Oil Painting - Belgium School

1940 - 1960
Description

Large signed oil on canvas buy the Belgium artist Guy Cambier (1923 - c. 2008). Guy Cambier was mainly a genre artist and was known for his scene, figures, portraits and still lifes.

At nine years old, he lost the use of his legs caused by a tragic accident. He was self taught and studied the techniques and works of those artists he emulated -mainly Corot and Watteau. Cambier started to exhibit in 1942, first in Belgium then later in France at the Cote d’Azur as well as in the United States and in Paris at the Salon des Peintres Temoins de leur Temps. In 1957, he received the Parisian award, “Le Prix de la Jeune Peintre”.

In 1950 he moved to the South of France where he spent most of his life in Grasse. Cambier became a favorite portrait artist of several celebrities and painted such dignitaries as Princess Grace of Monaco, Winston Churchill, Ingrid Bergman and Edward G Robinson. His paintings were also acquired by the French government.

The painting is in excellent condition, has lovely soft tones and is typical of the artist work. It is mounted in a more recent quality wooden frame and dates from around 1940-1950
