Description

A fine quality inlaid mahogany and satinwood writing table by the renowned firm of Edwards and Roberts of London. Very well made in solid mahogany with satinwood banding. The top is fitted with a sumptuous and original leather writing surface , surrounded by deep satinwood banding. There is a arrangement of 3 drawers; a longer bow-fronted central one, flanked by a pair of deeper end drawers. The drawer fronts are decorated with profuse inlaid detailing of floral swags , garlands and harebells. This wonderful decoration is repeated to the sides of the table. It stands on elegant tapering legs which terminate in their original brass caps and castors. We have had this splendid table sympathetically repolished to a very high standard. It is now offered for sale in excellent condition, with a lovely colour and patina.

Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.
