Description

Teke Engsis tend to look much the same but this one is a little different! Instead of the traditional single 'kejebe' (power & fertility symbol) at the top of the rug, this one has three kejebe symbols. The colour palette is beautiful and the rug is in very good condition.

Engsis were made by Turkmen tribes to symbolise the gateway to Paradise and were hung at the entrance to the Turkmen yurt mostly facing internally but some were used facing outwards - seen in a very few old photographs. This engsi dates to circa 1880 and was made by Teke Turkmen in the Akhal oasis.
