Excellent condition, fully overhauled
A fine and early Ormolu (mercury gilded bronze) boudoir clock of small and delicate proportions. It is Rococo in style, decorated with elaborate flowing foliage, scrolls and floral swags.
The clock sits upon an integral base with the pendulum visible, gently swinging. The dial is also ormolu with 12 individual enamel cartouches and blued steel hands. The hand fretted and blued steel hands are original. There are glazed rope bezels to the front and rear with convex glass to the rear to allow the movement to be seen. Unusually, the case is marked with the movement serial number, along with the founder's mark of Henri Picard.
The French movement is by Raingo Frères and is of high quality. It is the early version of the Pendule de Paris movement with outside hammer stop. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Zacharie Raingo was apprenticed in Paris in 1790 and went on to establish Raingo Frères in 1813. Initially specialising in precision astronomical clocks and then after 1825 clocks and bronzes. Clients included the Emperor and Empress. The firm exhibited at many of the important exhibitions of the second half of the 19th century and was known for the fine quality of its ormolu.
Henri Picard - The important founder and Gilder Henri Picard was based in Paris at 6, rue Jarente from 1831 to 1839, before moving to 10, rue de la Perle. The firm was active until around 1890. Celebrated for the high quality of his production, Henri Picard supplied many important patrons, including garnand table pieces for the petits appartements of Emperor Napoleon III at the Louvre. An important pair of twelve-light candelabra by Picard remain in the Muse´e du Louvre today.
Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with just some wear to the gilding on the high spots. The dial is also in excellent with no damage. The front glass has a slight chip to the edge and the rear glass has some scratching. A stunning clock ready to display.
Raingo Frères mark on the movement backplate and Henri Picard bronze founders mark on the back of the case.
Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
