Andrew Cox Antiques has dated this piece to the Georgian era.
It is supported on a belcher chain. To the reverse the makers mark is stamped twice presumably as a duty dodge to save tax being paid at assay and a way of giving some hallmarks without the full set. A wonderful rare anomaly, sought after by collectors.
