George III Period Mahogany and Inlaid Bonheur Du Jour

Description

An exceptional George III Period Mahogany and inlaid Bonheur du Jour, the upper part fitted with two banks of five graduated drawers flanking a central tambour fronted cupboard all above a fold out leather lined writing flap supported by two pull-out lopers flanking the single frieze drawer above a shaped apron on three sides and raised on slender square section French cabriole legs, the whole edged in ebony with satinwood crossbanding and ebony and boxwood stringing.

Ca. 1775

Height: 37”, 94 cms, Width: 30”, 76 cms. Depth: 18”, 46 cms.

Literature: It is not possible to ascribe this piece to one particular maker but it is possible to point to any number of plates in Chippendale’s “The Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker’s Director” third edition where the French influence and French Cabriole leg are used on all manner of pieces from tables and chairs to commodes and writing tables. Significantly this piece echoes the Writing Table illustrated as plate LXXII. There are also several tables by Chippendale himself of this model all at Nostell Priory in Yorkshire and illustrated in “The life and work of Thomas Chippendale” by Christopher Gilbert. Two such are fitted as dressing tables and another is fitted with a rising fire screen. See Plates 421, 422 and 436
