Edward H Niemann - Knaresborough Castle

Description

A superb Oil on Canvas landscape by Edward H Niemann of Knaresborough Castle ruins above the river Nidd and Aquaduct with a Shepherd and Sheep to the left above a rocky outcrop, one rock signed “Neimann”. He specialised in Yorkshire Landscapes and castle ruins such as Richmond in Yorkshire This picture bears an old label with the artists details etc.to the reverse.

His Father, Edmund, John was a prolific and well recognised artist who was very much sought after during his own lifetime and this is a fine example of his son’s work. Their paintings are very similar and Edward is only recorded as painting from 1863 to 1867

There is a label to the reverse which reads:

““This picture has been cleaned, restored and revarnished by Stacy-Marks Ltd, Art Dealers, 120-122, Terminus Road, Eastbourne, Sussex

Present Owner:M. Smith Esq, Monkton Court, Monkton, Nr Ramsgate, Kent, Date: 26th July 1983, Size: 30” x 50”

Title: Valley with Castle, River & Viaduct

Artist: Edmund.John Neiman Jnr”
