Description

This is an antique, Victorian, chinoiserie, fold over games table dating to the late 19th century c.1890.

A fine example of black lacquer chinoiserie of the period, sticking to the traditional pallet with shades of white, emerald greens and ruby reds further highlighted in gold.

Raised on straight legs with chamfered inner corners, delineated and decorated with gold, the forward facing frieze is richly decorated with birds and flora around a central garland. The side panels similarly decorated with the corners in emerald green beneath golden tracery.

The top is bordered in a band of green and gold interspersed with floral decoration, framing the main scene which features a man, pagoda, mountains, trees and birds in a well executed, traditional composition.

The rear leg swings open to support the fold over top which is a fine example of blue needlepoint decorated with flora and fauna set in to the black lacquered frame outlined with golden decoration.
