Description

A fine 18th century walnut longcase clock with year duration movement by the maker john holmes (i) operating the strand london mid to late 18th century.

With domed finial hood with ogee moulding above reeded columns, the brass arch dial with silvered chapter ring & roundel engraved 'tempus fugit per annum' wheatsheaf engraved on the surrounding edge, the chapter ring with arabic and roman umerals with inner second count chapter ring.

The clock comes from a private collection and is running and keeping time in the showroom, movement is in very clean condition (see photos) , has not been touched by ourselves and is sold in current condition. Exceptionally heavy 80lb & 50lb weights to drive the mechanism together with brass pendulum with regulator to the base.

The case with long shaped crossbanded door, walnut case with reinforced backboard and base (see photo)the base with ogee moulding above applied crossbanded panel base stood on shaped ogee bracket feet. Decent deep amber colour & patination, minor marks & rchip repairs to case but overall excelent condition.

John holmes noted in loomes as maker of great repute, set up shop on the strand in 1762, , supervised making by thwaites of clock for grenwich hospital, expert on mudges chronometers.
