A superb 19th century fruit wood carving depicting an old oyster seller shucking oysters. He smokes a pipe and is on one knee, on the floor is a plate of oysters ready to shuck and he holds an oyster in his left hand with a knife in his right. The old man is looking straight at you as if you were his next customer! This charming carving is beautifully detailed and depicts the man in tattered clothes wearing a voyageur cap neckerchief and sabots on his feet.
Oysters were poor people’s food from the 16th to the 19th century, as Sam Weller says in Pickwick Papers “Poverty and oysters always seem to go together”. This fabulous figure would be a great addition to a Shellfish/seafood bar or restaurant or as a feature in a Kitchen. The pipe is removable.
