18th century
Description

C18th George II period walnut and carved 'parcel' gilt framed mirror of Palliadian design .

Good large scale mid-C18th walnut framed mirror of bold architectural design influenced by the works of the Italian Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) , one of the most influential figures in Western architecture . Revered in Britain by C18th architects and designers ,such as William Kent , who adopted his principles , the Palladian style of architecture drew heavily on its composition from the classical architecture and design of the ancient Roman and Greek Empires.

Bold scroll pediment surmount following the lines of a Roman triumphal arch , with large central carved giltwood cartouche , carved rosette and leaf motifs to the terminals. Incised gilt-wood surround to the edges and to the original aged grey silvered mirror plate . The pediment divided from the plate with a bold 'egg and dart' carved gilt-wood mould.

The sides with carved gilt-wood leaf and berry ornamentation . The upper part of the sides with shaped classical volute scrolls . The base of the frame with a deep shaped apron .

In excellent original condition , with only minor areas of historic repairs to the figured walnut veneered frame surround.

The walnut of good quality selected figured veneers . The gilding of good , gently-aged patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
