Penwork was a decorative technique favoured during the late Georgian and Regency eras, particularly between 1790 and 1830. The process involved coating light-coloured timber with black lacquer or India ink, then drawing botanical or geometric designs before sealing with varnish.

These boxes were constructed from light hardwoods such as sycamore, birch, or holly, treated with black japan lacquer or ink. Details were drawn using fine dip pens or brushes, often complemented by metal lock plates, bone or ivory escutcheons, and small ball feet.

Authentic Regency penwork demonstrates fine craquelure in the protective varnish layer and honest wear along handled edges. The hand-drawn line work exhibits subtle variations in density and thickness, unlike modern printed reproductions.
