A fabulous quality 19th Century Chinese cabinet, a cupboard each at the top and bottom with workable locks, with a single drawer in the centre, with very fine carved details on the panels and doors, lovely colour, all in excellent condition, a very rare piece. Circa 1880.

Martlesham Antiques is a family run business and has been trading since 1984. Located in Suffolk just outside Woodbridge, Martlesham Antiques is run from a spacious thatched cottage housing nine large showrooms with a vast adjacent car park.

Specialising in 18th and 19th Century furniture, together with creating custom hand-made furniture which is supplied to various interior designers, trade and the retail market. Every piece on the showroom floor is in excellent condition and ready to go straight into the buyers home or premises.

All of Martlesham Antiques furniture is hand polished by their own French polishers and restorers to a very high standard. We are also a member of LAPADA, the association of art and antiques.

FAQs

During the late Qing dynasty, Chinese craftsmen produced display cabinets characterised by intricate relief carvings, asymmetrical shelf arrangements, and pierced aprons. Many of these pieces were created both for domestic use and for the Western export market.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from dense Asian hardwoods such as rosewood, hongmu, or zitan. Construction relied on traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery without metal nails or glue, allowing the timber to expand and contract with environmental changes.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved relief panels with slight variations, floating wood panel construction to prevent warping, and complex blind joinery. The timber displays natural surface oxidisation and wear consistent with age around joints and base feet.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall to highlight its carved silhouette and dark wood tones. Use the open asymmetrical shelves to display modern ceramics or glass objects, creating a contrast between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary forms.
