Fully Fitted Papier Maché Sewing Table

19th century
Description

A rare and charming fully-fitted papier maché SEWING TABLE in fine original condition.

Supported on a shaped central pillar leading to quatrefoil legs and decorated with gilding and Mother-of-pearl inlay, the lid opens to reveal the original fitted interior complete with its full set of tools and implements including: set of 7 large MOP cotton reels; set of 5 smaller MOP reels; tape measure; sander; waxer; set of 5 (of 6) MOP winders and silver handled scissors; penknife etc and an unusual silver thimble. Lovely condition.

** Although papier maché was evident in Europe as early as 1725, it was not till 1847 that Theodore Jennens patented a process of steaming and pressing laminated sheets of papier maché, often laid on to wood for strength, to make trays, boxes and sometimes pieces of furniture. It is remarkably strong and even suites of chairs in papier maché can occasionally be seen.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
