In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
It is typically made with a panelled construction and stands on four small feet. It has a hinged lid and is generally clean and tidy inside with its original floor.

It dates from the late 18th / early 19th Century. There are some very old holes in the wood that look like they've had nails in which leads me to believe it was a larger coffer that has been made into a smaller one or perhaps it has been made from pieces of wood once used for something else. It has certainly been a coffer for a very long time though and does not look unnatural.
The hinges have been changed at some time and there are a couple of old repairs.

It is a charming little piece and very honest. It is strong and sturdy and certainly usable and has the most gorgeous rich patina.
With a piece like this the best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions at all please ask.
