Description

Extraordinary Japanese Meiji period carved hardwood hall seat or box settle c.1890. Exceptional carved and pierced backrest featuring an enormous scaly dragon with vicious claws amongst clouds. Further dragons form the armrests whilst the decoration continues in high relief on the base with a scene of two dragons fighting. Broad seat with carved border lifts to reveal useful storage space inside for shoes etc. Produced as export ware to take advantage of the late 19th.c. fashion for Japanese goods, the design features concessions to English taste in the egg and dart moulding around the seat, the large acanthus leaves at the corners of the bench and the brass and ceramic castors.
