Charming 1930s Tavannes Pocket Watch and Chain

A most charming 1930s Tavannes pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a good quality stem-winding movement, 17 jewels with four adjustments, which is working well. The movement is signed Tavannes Watch Co.

The Tavannes Watch Company was founded in 1891 by Henri-Frédéric Sandoz and his partners, wealthy fabric merchants. The company was very successful and very soon they were exporting several countries including Canada, Russia, United States, and the Far East.

By 1905, the company was producing 450,000 watches a year and over the next four years, this rose to three quarters of a million watches a year.

The company was constantly looking at ways to improve and in 1910 they won the Gold Medal at the Grand Prix de Bruxelles.

This particular watch measures 45mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop so it is a little smaller than the normal 50mm diameter. The case is gold filled and it is in lovely condition with exquisite decoration to the back.

The lens is in good condition.

The signed dial is in its original finish and it is in good condition with just the odd minor mark, nothing too detrimental at all. The shaped hands are a particularly handsome feature.

The watch comes with a single chain which measures 25cm long including the T-bar and the clasp.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
