Welsh High Back Tavern Settle C.1840

Description

Superb mid 19th.c. painted pine high back tavern settle from the Welsh borders c.1840. High backrest with a narrow shelf across the top and beautifully shaped wing ends designed for privacy and to protect the sitters from drafts. Over shaped arms on turned supports and a single plank seat. Unusual extra shelf below the seat. Note how the base is flared at the rear to provide extra stability. Scumbled paint finish, attractively worn on the arms and front and continued on the rear. Excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
