Portrait of Lt. Robert Mallaby C.1850; Anglo-indian School.

19th century
Description

Oil on canvas in a modern reproduction gilt frame.

ROBERT MALLABY (1827-1907) was the eldest son of Joseph Mallaby Esq of Loxby Park, Staffordshire and the father of the Hon. Mrs. John Pleydell-Bouverie, nee Grace Mallaby. (Grace had married Lt. Col. Hon. John Pleydell-Bouverie of the 17th Lancers in 1882,. John was the son of the 4th Earl of Radnor and Lady Mary Grimston, daughter of the 1st Earl of Verulam.)

Robert was christened 7 November 1827, St. Peter's, Liverpool. He was appointed Ensign to the 13th Bombay Native Infantry in 1846 and eventually rose to become Lt. General in 1885. His white leather shoulder belt bears the number 13 and a Sphinx. This latter commemorates the regiment's bravery in the Egyptian campaign against the French in 1801.

Marriage: Sophia Blayney Harpur eldest daughter of the late Surgeon E.T. Harpur, Bengal Army on 27 December 1853 in Tanna, Bombay, India.

Children: At Upper Colaba, the wife of Lieut. Mallaby, 13th Native Infantry, a daughter.

At Neemuch, the wife of Capt. R. Mallaby, Deputy Quarter Master General, a daughter.

At Neemuch, the wife of Capt. Mallaby, Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General, a son.

1. Resided: 16 December 1857, 20 Queens Gardens, London.

2. Resided: 24 June 1907, Wimborne Lodge, Wimborne Road, Bournemouth, Hampshire.

The 13th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry was in the Bombay Army. In 1800 formed as 1st Battalion 7th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry; 1824 became 13th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry; 1885 became 13th Regiment of Bombay Infantry: 1901 became 13th Bombay Infantry; 1903 became 113th Infantry.

The 13th (Bombay) Native Infantry is listed in the East India Register from 1825, but it was not involved in any major action until the Indian Mutiny (1857–1859), for which it received the battle honour ‘Central India’.

The officers of the East India Company armies were largely from England, Scotland and Ireland. Scots and Irish were represented in a higher proportion than in the United Kingdom overall. Company officers generally came from more middle class backgrounds than officers in the British Army, who were more upper class.

SIZE: 44 x 36 inches inc. frame.

PROVENANCE: From the collection of the Leader family of Monk's Hall, Syleham, Suffolk.

VERSO: an old newspaper cutting concerning Lt. Gen. Mallaby.
