These unusual items, often referred to as 'butler's' decanters were thought to be for the convenience of containing four drinks at once, thus saving the butler repeated trips to refill glasses with different drinks. More likely is that when sold in France or Belgium, (where they originate) they originally contained four different coloured liqueurs. Nowadays, an alternative contemporary use is to fill them with bath oils etc. to dress a bathroom.
