Victorian Oak Extending Dining Table & 4 Leaves, C.1860, 10ft/seats 12

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: The Antique Furniture Company

A beautiful mid Victorian extending dining table in golden quarter-sawn oak with four additional leaves and dating to c.1860. It has a rectangular top with a moulded edge and rounded corners and stands on four attractive turned legs with brass caps and brown pottery castors. The table smoothly extends from 6ft to 108ft by means of a winding mechanism allowing it to seat 10 to 12 people if using all four leaves - the leaves can be added in any order of combination. Recently repolished and rewaxed but still showing signs of age and use including a long filled and repolished scratch to one end, with a good deep honey oak colour to the top and legs it comes with a winder handle. Unusually, the mechanism on this table is stamped J. Fitter, Birmingham and the late S. Hawkins (Samuel Hawkins first produced mechanical winders in 1846 and filed a patent in 1861, his business was taken over by Joseph Fitter in 1864).
