A Gents Over-sized 1930s West End Watch Co Watch

A gents over-sized 1930s West End Watch Co Sowar wrist watch.

The watch has a hand-winding movement, a Longines in-house calibre 15.26, which is working well. The movement has the West End Watch Co logo. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The West End Watch Co in Bombay were the Longines agents in India and they supplied many watches to British India’s civil service as well as military personnel.

The name Sowar was used for watches sold in India and the Far East, and it means “one who rides” in Persian and “warrior” in Hindi.

The watch itself is a very good size at 38mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the fixed wire lugs. The case is nickel. There is some marking to the front but not too detrimental. The case back has some unevenness and some indentations / knocks. The winding crown is a later replacement.

The watch glass has light marking but is very acceptable.

The signed dial is in good condition with just a short hairline crack on the subsidiary seconds dial. Blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

The watch has a vintage black leather strap although not the original.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
