Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the Georgian era.
The 8-day movement strikes hours and quarters on nine bells; repeating quarters and hours at will with a separate alarm train. Twin enamel dials; fine original gilt hands which include a fifth hand to show the date of the month and the subsidiary alarm dial to the arch. The main dial, with cast spandrels to the corners, is signed by the maker with an engraved signature to the backplate of the movement. 22ins high (excl upper finial).

Eardley Norton (1760-1794) was a very fine and well-known maker of clocks, particularly musical examples. In Buckingham Palace there is an astronomical clock made by him for George III and he made a large musical Bracket Clock for Empress Catherine. See Baillie page 460.
