George Melvin Rennie. Oil on Canvas ( the Isle of Mull, West Scotland)

1900 - 1920
Description

‘The Isle of Mull’ by the celebrated Scottish landscape painter George Melvin Rennie (1874-1953). The painting is signed by the artist, and shows the iconic mountain (or Munro) of Ben More seen from the shores of Loch Scridain.

George Melvin Rennie studied at Gray’s School of Art and Aberdeen School of Design. In the late 19th and early 20th century he became one of Scotland’s most popular landscape painters, and was granted access to the Balmoral Estate. Over the next 25 years he painted many iconic views of the Scottish residence of the British Royal Family, and its 50,000 acres of surrounding Aberdeen-shire countryside. Numerous landscapes by Rennie still remain in some of the properties on the Balmoral Estate, but a great many crossed the Atlantic during the first half of the 20th century having been purchased by American visitors to Scotland. Today fine Scottish landscapes by George Melvin Rennie are as popular as ever with collectors on both sides of the Atlantic.
