Delightful Japanese IVory Quail & Millet Lidded Box

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this nicely carved ivory box and cover from the Meiji period, the lidded box is oval in shape and depicts a group of three Quail upon ears of Millet as the finial to the lid , the artist has very cleverly carved a large group of Quail feeding in a field of Millet to decorate the majority of the box and its cover, the detailed low relief carving meeting between the lid and the base , the artist has made the best use of the offcuts available and has quite humorously captured a pair of Quail hidden behind entwined undergrowth , the underside of the lid and base are decorated with ears of Millet and the three feet are formed as curved ears of the grain , a very unusual and useful trinket box .

The condition is very good !
