Portrait Of An Officer, British 19th Century, Follower Of Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830)
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Titan Fine Art
Oil on canvas.
Large fine 19th century portrait of a senior officer seated in an interior. The sitter has been depicted in a British military jacket, with collar and cuffs decorated on black wool with elaborate embroidered oak leaves and acorns, elaborate fringed epaulettes, the front of the coat with ten paired buttons. These types of large scale portraits were popular during the 19th century and there were many artists working in this lucrative area for private commissions but also public display such as town halls, etc. This intimate portrait is touching, evidence that the painter knew how to get to the heart and soul of his subjects. Beautifully presented in a good condition swept frame.
Thomas Lawrence was largely self-taught and painted his first full-length at the age of nineteen. It put him on the map when the sitter introduced him to her friend, Queen Charlotte, who then commissioned her own portrait. Lawrence turned this into a virtuoso performance. His works are ma...rked by a fluent use of paint, and by a sense of scale and ambition which reflects his desire that portraiture be recognised as an elevated art form. He became the leading British portrait painter of his generation, and President of the Royal Academy. His fluent, expressive style and powerful characterisation lead to him being admired throughout and one of the most celebrated artists in Europe in the early decades of the 19th century.
