The carnation became an emblem of betrothal through its association with love imagery largely because its reputed ability to fend off evil spirits of which young lovers it was thought were particularly vulnerable. However, in this example it simply alludes to feminine beauty. The beautifully rendered fabrics and wrap were elements Largilliere specialised in.The artist captured the character of the sitter very well and depicted a smile which is often absent in many portraits of this age.
