Portrait Of A Lady, French 18th Century; Circle Of Nicolas De Largilliere (1656 - 1746)
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Titan Fine Art
Oil on canvas on board.
In this fine 18th century portrait a lady has been depicted wearing a green dress with gold embroidered bodice, upturned sleeves tied with a pearl clasp, and a luxurious crimson wrap. The carnation became an emblem of betrothal through its association with love imagery largely because its reputed ability to fend off evil spirits of which young lovers it was thought were particularly vulnerable. However, in this example it simply alludes to feminine beauty. The beautifully rendered fabrics and wrap were elements Largilliere specialised in.
The artist captured the character of the sitter very well and depicted a smile which is often absent in many portraits of this age. The modelling and handling demonstrates a capability and proficiency in the oil technique of painting. Presented in a fine carved and gesso 18th century frame with original beautiful gilding.
Nicolas de Largilličre (1656-1746) was born in Paris France, trained in Antwerp, and thrice wo...rked in London. His long career spanned the reigns of both Louis XIV and Louis XV, during which time he established himself as a leading portrait painter. Around 1674 he went to London were he met Sir Peter Lely. His work captured the attention of Charles II who was a fervent collector of the arts and Charles (and subsequently King James II) planned to retain Largilliere for further commissions and even offered him the prestigious position of keeper of the Royal Collection, but he eventually returned to Paris and continued to paint various aristocratic and noble individuals. He was Dircector of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris between 1734-1735 and 1738-1742. His depictions of women are particularly striking for their introspective character and decorative richness.
