John Howkins Antiques has dated this piece to the 1870s.
To the side is a pen tray and an ink well. The right hand side interior drawer has a catch which when released allows the brass galleried top and secret stationary compartment to rise on a weighted counterbalance . The top lifts over to reveal another pierced brass gallery and inside is the shaped boxwood pigeonholed and stationary compartment . To the right side are 4 mahogany lined drawers with original turned knobs, brass locks (with keys) and escutcheons with opposing dummy drawers. The whole standing on a shaped plinth base with turned feet with sunken brass castors.
