There is a burner below which would have been filled with fuel to light a wick, keeping the water hot and ready to top-up the teapot.

The lid is a bayonet fitting, requiring a twist and lift action. The underside of the kettle is marked (rubbed) for Fenton Brothers.
A rare and exciting find in excellent condition measuring 9 3/4" x 9 1/4" max x 9 1/2" tall. Victorian in era, dating to c.1880.
