Description

A magnificent writing box / lap desk made by the creme de la creme of Mayfair retailer's, Asprey of London, signed on the left hand side of the lid, engraved into the brass.

The box is made from a sensational example of rich burl Walnut and the top is made from exotic and expensive Rosewood and skillfully smothered with brass foliate inlay in Boulle style.

The box comes complete with the original working key and once opened reveals a fully fitted interior. A lift out writing surface is inset with a black leather writing surface with gold embossing. the top section has a removable pen tray with plenty of space underneath for storing additional writing instruments; to the right of this is a sloped compartment where pen nibs would be kept and to the left, is the crystal inkwell with a brass hinged lid.

The writing surface can be removed to reveal a tray below which in turn can be removed to reveal a further section below that.

A superb and highly collectable box in excellent condition and dating to around 1880. Pens and stationery etc. is NOT included in the sale but the original inkwell is of course. 13" x 10" x 3 1/2".
