Portrait Of A Lady C.1755; Circle Of John Vanderbank (1694-1739)

Oil on canvas.
A presentation label on the frame of this exquisite portrait states “Anne Busby Lady Tynte c.1755, From Lord Wharton''s ?”. Anne Busby, Lady Tynte (d. 24th March 1798) was the wife of Sir Charles Kemeys Tynte, 5th Baronet (1710-1785) who was a leading figure in the county and Member of Parliament up to 1774. The couple married in 1738 and two years later Sir Charles succeeded his brother Sir John Tynte 4th Baronet to the Tynte baronetcy and to Halswell House in Somerset (see photos), where he developed the gardens into one of the finest landscape gardens in Europe. Dying without an heir the baronetcy became extinct upon his death. The family was allowed to reacquire the baronetcy of Wharton (the title of a distant cousin) in 1916 and so another Charles Kemeys-Tynte became Lord Wharton.
The graceful composition, and rich and delicate brushwork create an alluring image and the light palette and softness result in an airbrushed finish. There is a very good treatm...ent of the lace carried out with bravura. This is a sensitive and tender portrayal of feminine beauty and a shining example of grand scale English 18th century portraiture.
Halswell House is a Grade I listed country house in Somerset. The earliest reference to the house is in 1318 when a licence was granted to a William Halswell for mass to be said in a private chapel there. In 1536, Nicholas Halswell began work on a Tudor manor house. The estate passed down through the family to Lord Wharton who in 1948 sold the contents of the house and then the house itself in 1950 (although the house was spared from demolition unlike almost 2,000 other great houses in England alone during a trend that swept through Britain in the post war period) ending almost 700 years of family ownership.
John Vanderbank (1694-1739) was born in London, the son of a well known royal tapestry weaver. Vanderbank studied painting first with his father and the portrait painter Jonathan Richardson. He was one of Godfrey Kneller''s earliest pupils at the Academy of Painting and started his own Academy of painting in St. Martin''s Lane. His work is well known due to his obvious skill.
