Late 19thc Mahogany and Leather Child's Armchair of Large Proportions

19th century
Description

A good quality late 19th century mahogany and leather child's armchair of large proportion, possibly by C & R Light.

This chair consists of a finely carved top rail with central ebonised finial with carved scroll design with foliage and flower decoration as well as scallop shell and other carving.

The chair uprights lead down to the arms which have padded armrests with turned supports.

The back and seat are upholstered in original brown leather fixed with dome studs. The leather does have a worn appearance but I feel this adds to the character of the piece.

The front legs are turned and the back legs are of splay design terminating with brass and porcelain castors.

This design of chair was typically produced by C & R Light, one of the larger wholesale furniture makers in London in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. They were based in Curtain Road, Shoreditch & this area was the hub of the International furniture trade at this time.

This piece is in good original condition, is of stable construction and could be used as it is or could also be re-upholstered by the purchaser.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian leather seating is recognised for solid timber construction, often mahogany or walnut, accompanied by deep buttoning or studding details. Design elements frequently included turned legs, carved back crests, and integrated brass castors suited for formal living spaces.

Primary construction materials included dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, paired with natural horsehair filling, steel coil springs, and full-grain hide leather secured with brass upholstery tacks.

Authentic period armchairs display age-appropriate wear and patina on the leather surface, hand-carved decorative motifs, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and period-correct brass or iron castors.

A historical leather armchair serves as a focal accent piece within a home library, study, or living area. Pair it alongside contemporary minimalism or modern lighting to create contrast and textural depth within the room layout.

Maintain aged leather by applying specialized hide food or leather conditioner periodically to prevent drying and cracking. Mahogany frames should be kept clean with a soft cloth and conditioned with natural beeswax polish, away from direct heat sources.
