Military Record Www Wrist Watch, Circa 1945

1920 - 1940
Description

A military Record WWW gents wrist watch, circa 1945.

The Record Precision Watch Company was founded in the early 1900s and was purchased by Longines in the early part of the 1960s.

During the 1940s, the Government approached 12 watch manufacturers to produce watches of certain specifications, suitable for use by British soldiers. They had to be accurate, reliable and durable. The 12 manufacturers were Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor, and Vertex, with some of the larger factories producing significantly more watches than some of the smaller factories. Today, military watch collectors aim to own the full “Dirty Dozen”.

This particular watch has a signed hand-winding movement, calibre 022-K which is working nicely.

The watch measures 36.5mm which is slightly larger than some of the other WWW in the “Dirty Dozen” collection. The plated case has some rubbing but overall is very acceptable. The stainless steel screw-on case back has the pheon (or military arrow) to the inside and outside, together with the letters WWW for Watch, Wrist, Waterproof. The code of the back of the watch has the pre-fix of L which is correct for the Record watches. Also there are three numbers on the back of the lug at 11 o’clock, this is also correct for a Record watch. Both of these issues vary depending on the manufacturer. As with any vintage watch, we really recommend that it is kept away from water. There are some scratches to the case back.

The lens is in good condition.

The signed dial has some small indentations and there is some marking if you look closely. The hands appear to be the originals, and are certainly of the correct design. There is a red mark painted underneath the number 12 although we are not sure of its significance.

A later leather strap has been fitted.
