Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally designed to sit between large windows (piers) in 19th-century reception rooms, a pier cabinet is a low, narrow decorative cupboard or display case. During the Victorian era, these pieces often featured ebonised timber, gilded metal mounts, and hand-painted porcelain plaques inspired by French Louis XVI furniture styles.

Victorian pier cabinets commonly utilised a solid timber carcasssuch as pine, oak, or mahoganyveneered in ebony or ebonised hardwood. They were embellished with cast gilt-bronze or brass mounts (ormolu) and inlaid with hand-painted ceramic or Sevres-style porcelain medallions depicting floral or figurative motifs.

Authentic 19th-century examples display period-correct construction features, such as hand-cut dovetail joints, original lock mechanisms, and natural age-related wear or light crazing on the ebonised surface. Gilt-metal fittings on genuine pieces usually exhibit historical oxidisation and cast details fixed with period slot-head screws.

The dark tone and gilded detailing of an ebonised pier cabinet contrast effectively against neutral or jewel-toned walls in contemporary hallways, living rooms, or dining spaces. Placing contemporary artwork or understated ceramics atop the cabinet creates a balanced juxtaposition between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or solvent polishes that can strip the ebonised layer. Clean metal mounts and porcelain plaques gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth, ensuring no liquid seeps into the wood joints or behind the metal fittings.
