Description

A superior quality kidney shaped desk by the renowned London cabinet makers, Edwards and Roberts. Of fine construction in desirable satinwood with inlaid stringing and cross banded in tulip wood. The stunning satinwood veneers are applied onto a solid mahogany carcas, a sign of real quality. The top is fitted with a sumptuous hand-dyed leather. There are two banks of 4 graduated drawers, flanking the longer central drawer. All drawers are fitted with their original brass swan-neck handles and are lockable (key supplied). The desk stands on tapering legs which terminate in their original brass castors. The inlaid detailing and cross banding continues to the sides and rear of the desk so that it could be free standing within a room if desired. We have had this desk sympathetically repolished by our craftsmen to a very high standard. It is now offered for sale in excellent condition, with a marvelous colour and patina.

By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.
